The Department of Tamil was started in the year 1967-68. This department takes care of teaching Part-I Tamil paper to various under-graduate programmes offered in this College.
The Department of Tamil has been encouraging students to participate in extra-curricular activities for the past 50 years in the fields of poetry,essay-writing, story-writing, drama, oratorical skills, and fine-arts. In association with the department of English, a “Workshop on Creative Writing, Poetry, and Translation Skills” was held on 10th and 11th of October 2001.
Department of Tamil, from the year of its inception, installed a forum called “Tamil Peravai” and organizes many useful programmes by inviting phenomenal and stupendous speakers like former chief ministers of Tamil Nadu Kalaignar Karunanidhi and Ms. J. Jayalalitha. The “Tamil Peravai” periodically conducts special lectures, and workshops to nurture and exhibit the latent creative potentials of youth. List extents with grate orators like Kavignar Kannadhasan, Jayakandhan, Sugi Sivam etc.,. To improve the language capacity of the students, the department conducts motivational training programmes by inviting experts in the relevant area and conducting awareness programmes to enrich the students, about the Maha Kavi Bharathiar’s contribution to Tamil literature and social reforms on his birth and death anniversary every year. International mother language day is being celebrated on February 21st of every year to insist the importance of mother tongue.

The Department of Tamil organized “36th all India conference of Dravidian linguists”, on 19.6.2008, in collaboration with International School of Dravidian linguists, Thiruvananthapuram.

The department of Tamil organized inter college workshop on media and its importance in the year 2014 and conducted workshop on short film making in the year 2017.
